A Delightful Gathering

Once I was retuctant to eat the cakes on the dessert table at any buffet banquet.  The beautiful cakes were scooped, chopped, and messed up by hundreds of guests.  As such, while organizing a family event,  I had requested that the cakes and other sweets be served in individual bite-sized portions – because, nobody is going to mess up my cakes.

It must be a hit, as since then, I see more and more desserts served in individual bite-sized portions at buffet banquets, and I would like to think that I started this trend.

I prefer a small gathering: close relatives, close friends, and close associates.  It gives me more time to enjoy their company over delicious food.

When hosting a small private party, though important to set up the scene and mood of the venue, priority would usually be on the quality of the food served.  Arriving guests might praise on the decoration, but once they start to enjoy the food, they will always remember how delicious the food was; the decoration would fade in the background.

Instead of serving an international spread, it would be best to decide on the regional cuisines, festive themes, or special occasions.

When the party takes place at your residence, home-cooked meals or catered food? Unless you are a good cook, with a kitchen and enough helpers in the same scale as a restaurant, it would be better to engage a caterer, or to buy each course from different but the best food providers.

For a standing buffet reception, it would be very considerate of the host for not expecting the guests to balance the plate in one hand and try to consume with the other.  The guests would appreciate a lighter plate to hold the food that is served in bite-sized boneless meats, de-shelled prawns, and the likes.

Ensure that more than enough food is prepared for the guests; it is totally unacceptable and embarrassing to run out of food during the party.  Should there be leftover food, ensure that you provide nice disposable containers - no take-away food should be packed for your guests in plastic bags!

After the food selection is decided, let’s go back to the decoration of the party’s venue.

If you have to decorate the party, do it for a “WOW” effect and response from the arriving guests that they would want to take a photo immediately with the decoration as the background.

Unless money is not a problem, a “WOW” decoration does not have to be excessive - expensive and only-good-for-one-time ornaments are unnecessary.  Be creative, and elegantly expressed the theme and occasion of the gathering or the celebration.

Now, let’s send out the invitation.  In this internet age, I would still prefer invitation cards.  Nevertheless, I would send “save-the date” emails to the guests, follow up with a simple, yet witty and elegant invitation card.

Each and every event should be tailor-made to suit in tandem with the host's purpose of hosting that event.  The guests should depart, wowed by enjoying the party so much that they look forward to be invited again by the same host to another unique party.
